*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***I received a bag of very old wheat cents (teens, 1920's, and 1930's), and a bag of Buffalo nickels. They were from a facebook friend of my mom's whose father had died, and he had these coins (he was a coin collector). She sent them to me, knowing that I collect coins. I was looking through them, and I saw a Wheat cent with a date of 1909. I look for a mint mark; there is an S. At that point I am already surprised. I flipped it over, and I could not believe my eyes; the initials VDB are there! My dad looked at it also, he confirmed the coin is indeed a 1909-S VDB. In it's current condition, it is worth around $950. I am still in shock about finding a coin this rare.

Also sorry about the blurry pictures, I know that you can't tell from the pictures what this coin is. I tried to take pictures of it with my I-Phone.

Quote: sorry about the blurry pictures, Your pics would improve if you took the coin out of the 2x2 before photographing it. It would be great to have a couple close ups of the mintmark with date and the VBD.

Not really a "find" when somebody gives you a 1909 S VDB. Its still a nice coin. Now, I know this may rain on your parade, but I would let the person that send it to you know its worth $950. I doubt that she knew what she sent you. Its only fair.

Coin appears to be in bad condition. Also, there are known fakes out there. More investigation is needed. John1

Any chance you could remove it from the holder and try for better pics?

I tried to take pictures before hand also, they did not come out well either. I will bring this coin to a coin shop for appraisal once the virus is under control. Thank you all for your feedback.

That coin would have to be in EF-40 to be worth $950 . Good luck .

If it's a true VDB S cent, (for me) I'd be sending your moms friend a very nice sized gift card

It's not worth 950 in that condition

If you are going to send it in for grading you should also include conservation as well. I know that NGC will only conserve a coin if it'll improve it. So you really have nothing to lose if you conserve it.

Better pics] are needed.
I use an iPhone and have no problems photographing coins. As suggested, try removing it from the 2x2 holder first, and get as close as you can, using a single light source. The built-in camera has a zoom that will automatically kick in. Keep trying!

CONGRATS!
The reverse looks pretty legit, probably F12-VF range coin. If it is genuine, which none of us can tell from these pictures, it badly needs conservation by a professional. I can see is has moderate level verdigris. The obverse, even with the blurr, looks discolored, corroded and possibly cleaned. Whatever you do, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE COIN with anything. Good Luck!
