nice one and nice collection, I love looking through these collections on PCGS and the pics are good but I have always found their photos hard to make out alot of the varieties, they need a zoom feature

Awesome! I saw this post an ran to my penny bin... I think I have 2 great examples (and 2 possible candidates) One shows clear DDO of "D.G.REGINA" The second of only the "NA"     |

Meandice,  to the CCF. Close, but the photos you provided show Machine Doubling unfortunately. The DDO has clear split Serifs in "REGINA" and you can see a completely separated "E". Rocky, as far as I'm aware "flat field doubling" is only on proof coins, an the coins Meandice posted dont look like proofs by any means. I've got more than a handful of coins exactly like the ones Meandice posted straight from Original bank wrapped rolls for 1967 in MS condition and they all look like Machine Doubling to me IMO. I've done the overlays, the devices are reduced drastically compared to a normal cent (device reduction = Machine Doubling) I'm not convinced it is anything more than that. Nice..I have a whole roll of these in ms 63-64 red with varied date doubling through out.. Seems the 60's were ripe with errors and varieties.

tone2tone, that is all Machine Doubling, I have one of these in MS as well. Rocky, US and Canadian Doubled Dies are two completely different things, what works in the US doesn't always apply to Canadian coins. So to answer your question that is clearly a Doubled Die, as you can see the separation and split serifs, but you do not see any of that in the coins Meandice posted, I am very well aware of what Machine Doubling looks like. Look at the following photos, one is a normal 1967, next is a Machine Doubled 1967 with Die Deterioration, the next coin is exactly like Meandice, but in MS condition. ALL Machine Doubling and Die Deterioration. I have a whole stack sitting in front of me and plenty more in circulated condition, which to me means it is very common.    I will point out that I think an admin should put Meandice's post into a post of his own so that SPP-Ottawas doesn't get hijacked over Machine Doubling. Thanks Rob. This thread got a little derailed... I was specifically referring to PCGS certifying the DDO that I wrote about, and subsequently ended up in the Charlton Catalogue. I can't take all the credit however, CCF member 'errorone2012' is the person who put that coin in my hands many years ago. The split serifs, to me, are the criteria for PCGS certification. okiecoiner JohnWayne007 I ment no disrespect I know you are both very knowledgeable. you are very good are coins. I have to disagree with both of you. but you see it as you do. I see it as I do. lets leave it at that. I will very soon show you a picture of real Machine Doubling. you will know what I mean then. keep up the good work. |
