Nice coin, less the crust. Do you think its too forgone to conserve? A dip or NCS (gulp) may help

I think this coin is still a fine example, if there is a way to get rid of those spots without damaging the coin I'd say go for it, but as it stands it still is a rather nice piece.

I'd say AU-58 details. Those crusty corrosion spots look too far gone for a simple dip. Looks like it has decent luster, and if I were to try to conserve it, I'd probably get NCS to look at it.

to me, those remarkably similar dark circles are completely unnatural in appearance. How it came to look this way I cannot imagine, so I consider it a details coin.

AU58. I'll bet it didn't look like that when ANACS graded it back in the day.

High mint state. Consider sending this one to NCS for an opinion on conservation and then PCGS for grading. You may have a very valuable coin there, registry quality, if that spotting is not corrosion. Don't try to conserve this one yourself.
As is, I'd say at least MS-62. Conserved, maybe 65 or better. A beautiful coin, spots be darned!

looks like the coin was not stored properly for many years acquiring the crust. it does affect eye appeal and value unless it can be conserved. AU58 or MS62. this one may come in at MS62 as it is with a possible details designation for ED

Those circular dark spots are strange. I don't know if I've seen anything like that before.

Looks like some large drops of liquid dried in place on the coin, eventually promoting corrosion on those spots.

I'd say MS-63 once conserved, assuming it straight grades.
I sent in a Barber half with similar toning to NCS. They were able to remove all of the dark toning and crust, unfortunately, it came back a little to blast white, killed most the luster and received a UNC Details. I'd worry about that with this one as well. Assume if its sent off for conservation, it may very well come back Details.

I've seen similar spotting on coins 2x2's where the plastic had small punctures allowing air to hit areas and cause spots. Who knows though. possibly target those areas with qtip and dip?
