Draped Bust coins in Third Party Grading baffle me. What are these "gouges" to the left of her hair? This coin is straight graded--why don't these marks make it a "details" coin?

Fair question.
I agree with your implied sentiments.

It's a subjective call, and you have to draw the line somewhere. Obviously the graders didn't think it crossed the line. I would tend to agree—the gouges are relatively small on a large coin, and the totality of the coin looks problem-free.

Coins of this size and age can be expected to show some signs of circulation such as the small digs noted - even the dreaded "adjustment marks" are normally accepted. I think this is a remarkably attractive specimen.

Agree with the above comments. Grade wise, I'd say XF-45..... wouldn't be shocked to see and AU50 , but I think surface preservation holds it to XF territory.

Thanks for your opinions! Is there any chance these are adjustment marks, or are they most likely damage done to the coin in circulation?

These are definitely circulation marks. Use the Search box to look for posts and pics of adjustment file marks.

While the coin is overall attractive, I'd never touch it b/c of the gouges

XF45 and AU a possibility. the graders are going to be a little more lenient with an 18th century coin when it comes to scratches marks and nicks. I agree with them that the coin should grade straight. they are just not bad enough to cross the line

With these coins, I am understanding there may be a difference between what is "normal" and "accepted" and what we want in our collections.

I will pass on this, as cool as the coin is.
