As far as I'm concerned, a "bison nickel" is this. The 1913-38 type is a Buffalo nickel.

When I first started collecting coins we called them Indian Head Nickels for quite a few years . After awhile that term faded and they were called Buffalo nickels .
I never heard the term Bison Nickels until my friend Helder ''hfjacinto'' became a member of this forum . Can't
change a person in what they believe in. But as the song goes : Home Home On The Range , Where the Deer's and the Buffaloes Play .

Like I told Tony, its a New Jersey thing, we use science here

But all kidding aside, I know they are called Buffalo nickels, but since the animal is a Bison, why not start using scientifically correct terms

Its the same with the Mercury dime, its a winged phrygian cap which is supposed to symbolize freedom of thought. I like the term Winged Liberty Head Dime, but everyone knows it by Mercury....

I'm also going to call the Walking Liberty the Pretty Lady strolling at sunrise

At least Anacs gets it correct

Sadly all you that voted for Buffalo are wrong as there are no Buffalo in the Americas.
Well, I am a Buffalo and my entire family are Buffalos, so that's proof that there ARE some in the USA.
(At least, that's what they call us Belgians here in the states)

We call them pennies when in fact they are CENTS!
We call them Mercuries when in fact they are WINGED LIBERTY dimes.
So WHY NOT call them BUFFALOES?
Yeah, coin people are a bit odd...

Yeah, while "buffalo" is pretty well accepted as a term for American bison these days (fun fact: the original bison were also European), it's hard to deny that the Winged Liberty dime (1916-1945) does not actually feature Mercury and never did. I'm actually surprised I didn't think of that first.

(I wonder if we'd be talking about the fasces dime now if the word "fascism" didn't get the reputation it did.)

In the end it makes no difference I'll still call them Bison or Native American Nickels. You can call them what ever you want

See that's the issue!! When I showed my wife the last note I purchased she said "you have too many notes and no cents"... we'll it could have been sense, I was trying to hide the other items I purchased :) and walked away quickly.

Shouldn't we go by an authority like the Whitman Red Book?
Page 135 states Indian Head or Buffalo. Page 455 states several times Buffalo nickels. Page 340 also states American Buffalo.
There fore the obvious thing to do is tell the rest of the World to stop saying Bison.

Buffalo nickel! Although technically wrong, I'm a traditionalist. Besides, growing up in western New York, I'm partial to the name Buffalo.
