Hi folks, I just bought a load of coins and in the lot was an 1876 Seated half dollar coin, the downside is, somebody many years ago made it into a badge. The condition of the coin is great otherwise but I was wondering how much this effects the value, or if the overall quality of the coin still commands a decent value. I'm completely new to this and being British and staring at god knows how many kings and queens heads fair the last few days, I'm a little green on this subject matter. I've hopefully uploaded some images to give you an idea but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forums! That is a cool piece although I am sure it would be worth considerably more as an unaltered coin instead of a neat badge. Collectors will undoubtedly still want it but will likely not pay up for it, possibly leaving it in the $20 to 40 range to the right collector. You may want to post this in the U.S. Classics section to get more replies and advice.

Just an old jewelry piece - may have some curiosity value, but $20+ sounds right.

Here's its French cousin. Charles X 5 francs. The portrait has been cut free from the coin and sort of floats above it. A fancy pinback of the detested final Bourbon king. It's cool but I've never worn it. It might fit in at a performance of Les Miserables.

Seems odd that the pin was done with the date facing in, since it was the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence. It's a cool piece but will always be "ex-jewelry". I have one presumably made into a watch fob. Found it in the clean-out pit in a recycled newspaper paper mill during a summer job! All sorts of weird stuff ended up tucked in newspapers that the pulper spit out.

Thanks everybody for your help and for taking the time to reply. It's a lovely piece albeit slightly quirky so I'm going to keep it in my ever expanding collection.

Remember back when those coins were new they were just coins.

Very cool badge/pin. That's a coin type I like just because the mint couldn't be bothered to spell out "dollar." LOL.
