Asking for your thoughts on this Draped Bust dime. It's got prominent clash marks and die cracks, as well as the Cud at star 1, characteristic of JR-1. There are some light hairlines and the patch of light scratches on the reverse, so I'm not sure if it will pull a details designation.

Ok. I throw out a grade. AU details. If not details I'd give it a 53.

A lot of character in this one. I like it.

Are the scratches on the reverse following the D in UNITED incuse or raised? If they're incuse, I think it's enough to Details it, AU Details, Scratches.
If they're raised I could see this straight grading, AU-53/55.

unless this one has been stashed away for over 200 years it had to have been cleaned. hairline scratches are prominent on the reverse. I'm in the AU details area but this is still a sweet coin I just wish it had some original surfaces on it.

The small patch of scratches next to the D on the reverse are not die polishing lines, but they are actually not very noticeable in hand. I used that light angle so they would be visible in the photo. There clearly are some light cleaning hairlines, especially on the obverse, but since most coins from this era have been cleaned, I'm hoping that PCGS will be lenient.

Did you buy this one raw? I presume you are confident the Cud on the obverse is not an old repair or ex jewelry remnant. It is a nice coin but I think it may get an au details grade due to cleaning.

Yes, bought it raw. Here's some info on this variety with the Cud:

Even if it gets an AU details grade, it looks nice in hand and I'm quite happy with it.

First off, it's a heckuva coin, regardless of assigned grade. Don't expect you will have many regrets for buying this little beauty.

The reverse scratches seem the most significant defect. The coin has very little wear and qualifies as AU-58 based on that criterion. Certainly PCGS or NGC may decide AU Details due to those scratches. The coin might however get a straight net-grade of 55 or 53.

Terrific coin either way. Congrats!

I think it's been cleaned, just not badly, I also think it won't matter to PCGS on this series and date. It should go AU low end 50/53 range, maybe an EF45+ at worst, but still no details on it for cleaning, I am however worried about the area around the D of United on the reverse and the staple scratch down the field under the eagle's wing. Those areas could be trouble and cause a details grade alone, but not for any old cleaning. A neat variety and if bought as a normal dime and not for the variety well done!

Well, it took me over a year to get this one sent to PCGS for grading, but I thought I would update this thread. It came back AU details for cleaning, which most of you guessed. I'm not surprised, and I'm glad it didn't get dinged for the minor scratches on the reverse. Here's the slab and the TV photos--the slab is closer to the actual color.
