I swear I collect more than just Buffs Just been on a kick here working on this AU-MS set.

Just got this one back with a bunch of others. For the most part, I was happy with the grades. There were quite a few that I felt they were conservative on. And a couple that I felt were more than conservative. Mid-High AU and low MS Buffs always seem to be a crapshoot with the TPG's.

Wanted your thoughts on this, as I feel they missed the mark. Just doing a quick 24 guess the grade before the reveal to get an unbiased opinion.

Luster is much more apparent in hand, tried to capture it with a few extra sub par pics.

That toning is amazing! Congrats on owning it! I've recently started my Buffalo journey too, but am only about 4 coins in. I think a little wear is apparent on the high points of the cheeks, and high points of Black Diamond. I'd say AU53-55.

I had an 1938 D/D come back from the August special. They gave me a MS63, which I felt was a tad conservative myself. At least I got it protected and the OMM variety confirmed.

AU-53. The flatness of center of coin on obverse and reverse is turning me off . Not a fan of this Buff .

Pretty weak strike which is not unexpected for that year.
IMO it's low AU.

Based on the photos I'm at AU50/AU53. The toning is nice, the strike is weak and there is some minor wear on the high points. Considering ANACS has been tough on these, I'll say the grade is XF 45. Considering the high point wear, I can see it. BUT honestly, I would love to have this in my collection, it's a beautiful coin.

I'm with hfjacinto. Yes, ANACS seems to be tough on these. I'm not that familiar with weak strikes or if they affect the grade.

Based on this one, I'd say your is XF-45. A+++ on your eye appeal!! Nice coin! !

BTW: Yes, I think ANACS "way" under-graded this one!

i think the coin has had light circulation. a lot of the flatness we are seeing is from strike. I'm not familiar with strikes on this year so not sure if its typical. in any case it would still affect grade. it does have nice toning and I'm not fan of toning but I've seen quite a few buffs that look good with it. typically I would put this in the AU58 box but I need to knock it a point for strike so AU55 is where I'm at.

This is how I approached this one.....I had this at a 55, too much wear for a 58, but really didn't feel the amount of un disturbed areas warranted a 53 (and definitely not a 50).

In hand there is no broken luster in the fields, which are pretty clean, minimal hits. Low and mid relief points have maintained most luster. There is the obvious flat spots at the usual high relief points, typical of 1913-15. Part of this is strike, but yes, there is definitely wear there as well.

Given the weakness in strike, I attributed a number of the hits in the hair just about the braid and hits to the front leg/shoulder area to planchet marks not removed by strike ( these are typical concentrated areas of excess tic marks in weak strikes). The remainder, marks made in circulation based in the number of marks in the rest of the coin.

My 17-S came back an what I feel is an honest AU-50, may post pics of that in here later for comparison.

Guess I missed the mark, (probably rightfully so haha), but I really shouldn't complain, I only have $32 into this one including grading

Thank you all for your input!!

In the future, please try to wait at least 48 hours before revealing the grade so everyone has a chance to chip in.
