I once heard about an idea called the One Box Collection where you have a single slab box, 20 coin slabs, and that's your whole collection. As you are interested in new coins, if you're at 20, you sell one to welcome a new coin. That way, over time, your collection gradually curates itself into an incredible set of just 20.
I have a fairly minimalist way of collecting, so after my 7070 (US type), 7094 (US Silver Commem Type), 7210 (Canada Type), and custom 7070, I don't want coin "bulk" beyond a few sentimental 2x2s. For me, the One Box method would mean keeping my collection small but curated, and let me continue collecting without solely upgrading the same albums.
If I had a box, my dream would be classic US type pieces in high grade (1792-1799), 1300s-1600s British hammered silver with portraits, and a small assortment of old (200+ yr) world crown size coins.
Would you ever think about downsizing and trying this method out? Whether you would or wouldn't actually do it, what would be in your box? Edited by tdziemia

I sort of already use this method, although I have a box for each country (type collections), and the boxes hold more than 20 coins each. Still, its kept me down to 3 boxes, and has ensured that I only keep what I absolutely want. I think its a good way to go if you dont feel the need to be completest.

I have a box of coins, it has several thousand in it, not 20. 20 is a garnish in my opinion. I will soon be welcoming coins 7187 to 7223 and will not need to sell any to make way for it. I read about it before this thread and the answer is no.
I'm pretty frugal and would rather have a full set of circulated coins that 1 GEM. Even for my 7070 where I'm going higher quality, I would rather have an MS 62 than an MS 66. So the answer is no.

There's no way I could do this. I prefer my coins in albums and like complete sets (or as complete as I can get them)

Nope. No way. I can understand how some people might have fun this way, but there is just too much of what I perceive as eye candy out there to have only 20.

No, I could not narrow things down and save just 20 coins and call it my collection.
Maybe 200 if I could keep a couple lifetime collected sets. Which may just happen someday too.

This is pretty much my opinion, with the caveat that MS-62 is also often too high of a grade for my collection. Of course there's one more problem with the "box" as described in the OP: slabs. I collect a lot of ancient coins, and as far as I'm aware ancient coins pretty much only get slabbed 1) by vain collectors who think slabs are awesome, or 2) if they're so ludicrously high grade that slabs are useful for protection. Option 2 is out of my budget and not really in my interests anyway, and option 1 tends to be terrible quality and overpriced. So if my box needs to be all slabs this basically means I can't have a single ancient in it unless I get ludicrously lucky. Slabs aside... well the 1657 Elbing, of course, the 1622 Bohemian, the overstruck denga, the Judean 8 prutot, the Serbian... the Yemen... the Saint Pierre and Miquelon... hold on... ...yeah, I suspect that even if I try to [mentally for now] whittle down my collection to the outrageous cherrypicks I absolutely want to keep it would already be more than 20. Though it would be nice to actually try to write down a set and see how close to 20 (or less) I could get (except that after I post the set I'd probably immediately remember a coin that I forgot to include). |
