I noticed a few shiny Van Buren dollars in the register today, so I looked at them and decided I didn't want any of them, until I saw one with an indention right on Van Buren's head. I don't have a camera yet so I can't show any pics, which I know would help a lot. But the "crack" starts right above the top wrinkle in his forehead and goes up to the top of his head. It starts out very skinny and gets wider as it goes up. It's also right in the middle (left to right) under the left base of the letter A in VAN.

I guess my question is what is this? It doesn't have a shinny look like a post mint scratch (and deeper too), and it looks like it belongs there. I had to look at the others to make sure it was not supposed to be there.

An image would be absolutely imperative to determine what you are talking about. Sorry.

TC, not having a picture is not the best way to assist you, however does this "crack" appear to be raised or incused( sunken ).If raised, and you compared to like coins and it is not on the others, it probably is a die break or die crack. These things occur on occasion and are , in my opinion, sweet.
Try to find a camera, BE WELL, MIKE

Die cracks look like scratches but are raised.

You said that there was an indention (sp) on his head, that usaully means that it's post mint damage.

Die cracks are small lines that are raised.

Die breaks are very strong and raised. You can feel this one with your fingernail.

Damaged coins presses in the devices/fields.

A strike though wire will leave even width lines into the coin. This one shows even an end of where the wire ended.

An image would help, but these images may help as well.

It actually looks a lot like one of the creases in Van Buren's forehead. At least it's that kind of "indention." I'll call it smooth, well-placed, post-mint damage. At least until I get a camera.

I had given up on this one, didn't even check it after that first reply. Thank you all very much for your help.
