Looking for some help to identify a possible error on a nickel that I have. I found the coin in a bag of change from the early 1970s so it is unscathed by circulation. The reverse of the coin has a large gouge where it looks like something may have deformed it during minting. The wording is still there making me believe this is a type of error. As my first post in this community, I am hoping I am following all guidelines and am sure that y'all can help me identify. Thanks.

Very interesting! First step would be to remove the coin from the 2x2 and take new photos--the result will be better images to help us see what's happening.

To the CCF Not the best of photos to identify anything but I would say that it is possibly Struck Through Grease. Clearer photos taken outside of the holder would help.

It seems as though there is a gouge in the coin. After looking at many of the grease-filled die errors, this does not seem to be the same issue although I could be wrong.

Appears to be a struck through error, but something more substantial than grease, not totally sure what.

Should I hang on to it hoping that it is worth more than 5 cents or just spend it? I am just getting started as a coin collector but as a college student, I cant keep stuff around that doesn't have any extra value. Thanks again!.

Maybe better terminology instead of grease would be Die Fill but it is certainly struck through something.

Quote: Should I hang on to it hoping that it is worth more than 5 cents or just spend it? That's definitely a keeper if you can spare five cents. I bet someone would pay you a few dollars for it.

Looks like a huge strike through to me. Very cool find! Certainly a keeper if you can spare it. Should hold a premium above face value.

Or struck through debris, like cardboard/grease.
