I found this coin and I noticed that it sis not have a mint mark but the 8 had what appeared a hit but on closer inspection it looks like the D mint mark was placed on bottom part of #8.
I also noticed that the top part of #8 has a vertical slanted indentation on left side of top circle.
That kind a looks like a #7 but I really have no idea.
Please what do I have?

Mintmarks until 1989 were applied to the dies by hand, but while the marks varied in location a bit, I don't think they were way up into the date like you are asking about. The 8 in your date has taken a blow, which may be what you are seeing as looking odd. That's my opinion, anyway.

@iom, yes the number 8 in the date has taken a hit which has pushed some of the metal on the lower loop toward the center of the coin. Typically we ascribe this sort of mechanical damage to use of the coin in bubble gum machines.

I agree, the 8 took a (lateral) hit which moved a bit of the metal--copper being a relatively soft metal. We see these examples a few times monthly on this site. Coop--a member of our community--has a graphic which shows how this can happen.

Search for "Coin wrapper damage" in the search box and you will see other topics with the same information.

Here's one on a Wheat cent that actually has an 8 damaged like your 8...........

EDIT: Coin wrapping machine/vending machine

Thanks for info.
I learn something today.
I had never heard of gum paper damage. That is exactly what I have.
Thanks.

These were used in the earlier years to buy stuff from vending machines: till about the early 70's gumballs were the favorite thing, just like the quarter machines now for the same thing, but a lot larger.

The coins were damaged using machines like this.
