I was surprised how hard it was to find a 1918 with a full date, problem free in the lower grades. The coin has the second highest mintage, but the selection available is not in proportion to mintage. I paid $39 for this example and feel lucky to get it for that price.

IMO it's in the VF-30 area.

I would drop it down a notch to VF-25 . Decent price .

I'll go VF35 with the eagle having nice feather details helping out.
EDIT: Very nice full date example

Really solid VF. Quality is important. This is a nice one. IMHO, a solid, well-struck, problem-free VF like this beats a mushy EF any day.

I'm putting a low grade set together. My criteria is a clear date original no problem coins. Not very easy.

Enough remaining detail to warrant VF35

i am way different than the others on this one and heres why. you can make out all three leaves on the cap and they are almost fully defined, there is full separation of the sash from the shield to the right hand across the mid section, the leaves on the olive branch are completely defined and sharp, the breast is almost fully rounded. there is some weakness in strike on the obverse attested to by the inset boxes detail under the mottos.
the obverse of this coin is in the XF45 to AU50 range. the reverse about XF40. I think the obverse holds this one to net XF45. just my opinion.

Quote: I'm putting a low grade set together. My criteria is a clear date original no problem coins. Not very easy. I have had the 1925 to 1930 SLQ in VG/F for three of four years with no plan or desire to complete the set. I pick out of junk silver the 1925 to 1930. I not sure how or why I got started on doing the 1917 through 1924 in low grades with clear dates. The 1916 will not be part of the set and I am still undecided on the 1921 and 1923 S.

I was surprised that most of the grades were 30/35.

Looking at all the detail in the chest, shield and eagle, I'd go EF-45 on this one. Nice original coin.
