 to the CCF It's likely silver plated, or some other bright shiny metal plating. Meant as a curiosity or to fool people. It is not a 90% silver quarter such as 1964 and prior. |

Looks plated (bright and shiny, but looking a little worn, unless the glare has me fooled). 1965 silver quarter = tiny chance of being struck on leftover silver planchet from '64. But 1969 is five years removed from circulating quarters being struck in silver. Plated coins are common. My local dealer tried unloading some plated State Quarter abominations on me last week. I think he was doing it to get my goat... But as already suggested, check the weight to help make sure. Edited by Numiscrat

Larger, sharp photos may help. Plating may be an issue. Shiny 'silver' reeding on a 52 year old circulating coin can be a bit odd. How long have you had the piece?

Normal weight for a clad quarter is 5.7 grams and for a silver quarter 6.3 grams. Mint tolerance is +/- .19 grams. John1  |

Looks plated to me too also if you look at the wings tips and the field under them it looks pitted.

I have to vote on plated ; probably silver plate . Bring it to a coin shop and ask them to weigh and test the coin for silver .

The weight will help to determine the fate of this coin, But, if it is silver plated, a sliver test may not help to confirm if a coin is silver (due to silver plating) HOWEVER, maybe get a tiny file, and remove a tiny bit from the reeding on the side of the coin. If silver nothing should shows up, your coin is silver and you would not know it was filed, But if copper shows through - well then you will have proof positive that this is a silver plated clad coin. |

We've all had a coin or two we were certain was special, but turned out not to be. When you start to learn more about coins, you realize how incredibly common it is for people to manipulate them. Any number of reasons, chemistry class, making jewelery, trying to pass them off as errors, maybe just boredom. Chances are much higher that it's plated, but I'm not the expert here, so give it a weigh just like they recommended. |

Plating shops plate cents with chrome or gold to show examples of their work. They keep them in a bowl on the service desk to give to customers to show the quality of their work. Did you ever notice, that some plating another plating look better than others? To to the job to make a coin look chrome, they plate the coin with copper, nickel and then chromium steel. That three step process helps give the depth of a proof coin. When they use just one layer, it doesn't look as nice.

Unless for some mishap, a silver quarter blank got caught in the chamber for a proof, and it got dislodge mixed with business strike after 5 years.
The possibility is there, but not being discover for over 50 years, and the way it looks, its .0000000000001/10000000000000000000000 chance.
