I bought a couple of 1968 mint sets a week ago. These sets were housed in pilofilm and I was disappointed to see that the Half Dollar and Quarter coins were dull in both sets. I debated opening the sets to to try and save the other coins (I've never broken a mint or proof set before). Before I did, I took a microscope to the coins. The Kennedy half looked odd. I noticed some letters that seemed oddly shaped or bigger than other letters. I thought I saw split serifs but figured it was the film I was looking through. Since the other coins looked nice and I had no plans to sell the sets, I cut open both sets. When I took another look at the Kennedy, again I saw split serifs and odd shaped letters. I went to Wexler, Vistavariety, PCGS and NGC. I have to admit that I didn't know what TDO stood for and had to Google it! Upon closer look, I saw that some of the doubling looked like it might be tripled.

I'm no expert at this and I'm OK if these turn out to be DDD or MD. I figured you guys could tell me what you think.

You can safely wipe the coins with a soft soapy cloth and in most cases the dull filming will clean off specially on your 50c since it has Silver.
As for the doubling, it doesn't look like hub doubling particularly looking at the R ,it looks like MD and it is pretty difficult to tell if there is a doubled die because your images are over exposed and pixelated with glaring light, a sharper focused images will be helpful.

The images would be a bit more helpful if they were taken in blocks. "In God", "We Trust", that way we could get a better idea of what were are seeing. Sometimes too close, doesn't help as it removes perspective. I see V.V has three dies listed for that year/mint.

The '68 uncirculated mint sets I've acquired have almost universally contained 'cloudy' halves and quarters. The other coins were somewhat impacted as well. I'll try digging them up and giving the halves a closer look.

Thanks for your comments. I've tried to get some improved pictures - zoomed out, no color and reduced lighting. I focused on the "IN GOD WE TRUST". I still see some distorted characters ("E" and "TRUST") and split serifs ("N", "U" and first serift in last "T"). Also
some possible MD of the serifs of "D"? But my eyes are not experienced enough to determine what this is. I look forward to your verdict! Oh yeah, the funky mint mark doesn't look like an RPM or D/D to me. Just messed up.
