This coin was flagged as a counterfeit, and I bought it as such. But I'm not a Mercury collector so am looking for advice as to exactly which method of counterfeiting was used. I'm guessing it is a glued on mint mark. Am I right?

It weighs 2.36g.

I'm also guessing it's an added mintmark. There were 4 reverse dies used for the 1916-D, and I believe in all of them the stand of the D is parallel with the stand of the nearby E. This one looks angled wrong.

Very interesting. Check mint mark placement using these images by way of PCGS:

I don't know much about 16-D mercs but that MM sure looks too far slanted to the right .

The inside of the D should have the triangular knockout shape, position is slightly off, maybe take a picture at an angle around the mint mark to see sign of "glued" on. Not a bad counterfeit.

Looks like an "s" mintmark was shaved off and a "d" mintmark was carelessly positioned and glued/welded back on.

I'm guessing this was one of the counterfeiters trial pieces used to fine tune his skills. Many others are still out there!

Thanks for the great comments! Sounds like my guess was right and the general agreement is that the D has been added. That'll be how I label it.

It does appear to have an S under the D. I'd try putting it in Acetone to see what happens. Might be a real 16D. I tend to ignor all the stories of how things were done a long time ago.

I paid ten bucks for it. And honestly am not very inclined to put it in acetone, as I collect counterfeits and if the D fell off then it would ruin the coin for what it is. I do not have a 1916-D in my collection, as not what I collect, but now I have two of these nifty counterfeit 1916-D coins, which I do collect.

I too would suspect the mint mark because to the best of my knowledge, the D is supposed to be tilted but not quite this much. I believe that if you could draw imaginary lines from the serifs of the D, it should line up with the center leg of the E of One or perhaps just slightly higher. This one looks like it aligns with the top leg of the E
