I've seen these before, it's some kind of acid restoration I believe. this one is fairly well done, but regardless, it's a details coin. $66 would be a return for me IMO.

Agreed with the upthread. Given the porosity, very likely an acid was at play here. XF Details as it is and would be a return for me as well.
Was the porosity not noticeable in the sellers pics?

The pics were scans so I thought it may have just been the lighting, so I took a chance on it.

Send it back, I have a vinegar soaked Shield nickel with rays that has that exact appearance. It brings back the design because of the hardness of the nickel remaining and the copper is removed.

I have seen this before. Looks like it was soaked in vinegar and that would be the acid.

If it looks as grainy as the pictures show, that's a pretty harsh clean. Cleaned coins aren't for my money

It is a shame what someone did to that coin. However, if you need it, might not be to horrible to keep. I wouldn't want it.

There used to be a forum member (weerdsteve maybe?) that bought dateless Buffalo nickels and had a process to restore them. That coin looks close to the same process.

Yes that procedure can be found on youtube. They used vinegar and peroxide.
