Searching Slot Machine Jackpots - Not Exactly Roll Hunting

I have only ever been to two casinos. I have not been in over 20 years, but even back then they only had cashless (electronic) and token slot machines. It would have been fun if they had legal tender coin slots, that is assuming I would win something to search.

In my vast experience with slot machines, (I've been to Vegas once) I found that the coins I won were so well used and beaten by other coins, that the details looked smeared. My wife hit several large nickel jackpots and I hit a couple of quarter wins. Almost all of the coins had thousands of contact marks. I think it would be difficult to find varieties on these coins and even more difficult to sell them due to the condition.

As I said, I only went once, so my take on this kind of search is limited at best.

Cool topic! I've only been searching for about ten years and the machines I've played since then are cashless. The machine makes a tink, tink, tink sound and kicks out a ticket. NO FUN! I'm with Yokozuna though, I would say they would be pumbled to death.

Would be nice to have a list of casinos that still use coins. But, I would have to agree from limited experience that most of the "jackpot" coins are well-battered. Still, it's not uncommon to find NIFC halves—IF you can find a machine to dole them out.

Should have mentioned that I've also snagged some half rolls from casinos for the purpose of CRH.

Oh gosh... I used to do that back in the day. I would play the half dollar machines specifically to look for silver. Had a whole little bucket of 40% silver halves I accumulated during the '80s and '90s. I went through nickels a lot too. Those were the days.

El Cortez Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, just off freemont st. it's the only place I can think of really, they still gave a few hundred vintage coin operated slots (video poker mostly) and they have some dollar token slots for the higher rollers, although last time I went to vegas it was pre-pandemic 2019.

Circus Circus uses tokens for all of theirs.
Slots of fun just had a handful of quarter coin ops left, maybe 6 or 8?

I've stayed local to gamble since then, I find if the casino uses a ticket system they usually have one or two of the redeeming machines somewhere in there that will give loose change, and I can build up a small pile by cashing in my tickets frequently on the trip to search later on when I get home and that's the best I got since ticket in/ticket out is becoming the norm and coin op disappears more every year as machines break and parts are unavailable to fix them.

searching the payout tubes would be more like roll searching........

My Dad used to work at a place that put gambling devices, pool tables, cig machines etc in bars in western Pa. On occasion, if hearing about a possible police raid, he would have to try to remove machines before it happened. Sometime in the early 1960's a console slot ended up at his sisters barn. As kids in the 70's, my cousins and I played around with it and other machines trying to get them to work with no success. Sometime in the 90's, my Dad was up at the barn with my cousin and I and went over to that old console slot that had been sitting there for 30 years and got into it, removed the payout tube and dumped it out and was all 90% Washington quarters. (I started collecting coins in 1972....Dad saved silver since 1965, so I didn't get any of them...LOL)
