My mother gave me some of my Dad's things when he past a few years ago and this medallion was among the items. I have been all over the web trying to find out what its origin or story might be. The leather pouch is from a place that no longer exists and I'm not sure they originally went together. Dad was in the Korean War and also traveled to Japan while on leave, not sure if there may be a tie in there. Any help would be appreciated though. The specs are as follows: Weight- 5.9 oz/167 grams Width- 2-3/4 in/69.85 mm Thicknes- 1/4 in/6.35 mm Copper/Bronze Thanks for looking. MC -makecents-

@make, any thoughts on whether the leather pouch is related to this medal or if it just a convenient holder? I note that the current proprietors at this address are a tattoo and piercing salon.

I've kind of done all the typical things, like you did but have come up empty. I'm not familiar with the language on it but did try matching it up with various languages. Searched places I knew he had been but still came up empty. It's been a tough one to track down.

Ok yep sorry I missed that. To me this looks Chinese, perhaps from Inner Mongolia with that archer?

I don't know how to read this script but am Asian. What can tell without researching is that it looks like Chinese, but not the normal type neither the modern traditional or simplified script. Which leads me believe that it was something pre-1940s, so something to do with Japanese or Korea (guessing north korea @ the time of the WW2)
Im happy that your sharing pictures of this medal.

It is a souvenir medal in celebration of a Fair I'm unable to figure out of the time, those artistic Chinese characters are difficult for me to translate. The part I can make out with the words on the reverse side. #21338;#35261;#26371;= Fair. #25136;= War. On the obverse side is has the number 39 and some words before it.

Forum doesn't support Chinese text input, so this is the best I can decipher so far.

Thanks, macmercury! That's some good information to help me refine my search a little more. With "39" and "fair", I immediately thought of the 1939 worlds fair but could not find any ties there either. I'll keep looking. I really do appreciate yours and everyone else's input though.

Thank you for taking time to look and your information, David! I'm still digging. I may need to find someone who deals in Korean antiquities. I would have not thought it would be this hard to find info on it but I'm going on two years of searching, on and off.

Figured I would give this thread a bump, I have still not found anything. Hopefully someone who has not seen this thread may know something.
Thanks. Jon.

Two guesses that may (or may not) help. I would guess this medal found its way to West Virginia by way of a veteran from West Virginia - the pouch likely has no bearing (as was suggested already). And second, that the year 39 is based on the Chinese calendar (I read somewhere holidays use the Chinese calendar) which would equate to 1962 (I think 1962 but figuring out the conversion is confusing).

Thank you, joewobblie! I will see if I can use any of this information to help in my findings. I and my father were originally from West Virginia and if the 1962 date holds true, it may have not been purchased while he was in Korea, which was several years earlier, during the Korean War. The town that the pouch has printed on it was only 45 minutes from where we lived and he may have purchased it there, possibly reminding of his time in Korea, and nothing more than that. I just thought it was a really cool looking medal with very nice artistic work and was curious about it for different reasons. I put all the measurements and weight up but do not think that shows its true size to most folks. I will put up another coin with it to help give everyone a little better idea of how large it is. On top of being a beautiful piece, it's a hunk!
