Well folks it was a long road, but I finally finished the set with a final rating from the PCGS set app of 59.69 Rank 125 Anyone want to take a shot at the final piece of the puzzle? Didnt want to take any chance on this one, it is Gold shield and RFID Seller's Pictures. Edited by farrider11 08/15/2021 12:03 pm

Congrats on finishing the set! Quite the undertaking!
I'm at XF45, guessing is straight graded, but fields around "States" look suspicious to me.

Ill take that one variable off the table, everything in the set straight graded. Thanks for the reply !

@far, I won't hazard a guess as to the grade, but I did want to congratulate you on a huge accomplishment. Well done!

Congratulations! Fantastic achievement, and a great coin to bring it to completion.
I'm at a solid AU-53 here. The detail in better struck areas of the coin is spot on AU-53. The areas of the coin with sub-53 detail are due to the typical New Orleans strike. The coin has plenty of original luster.
The question, though, is how PCGS would grade this coin. I've had more than a few facepalm rodeos with PCGS grades on New Orleans Morgans in the past few years. Their difficulty seems to be because of imposing appearance consistency, without adequately distinguishing between strike weakness and circulation. Some areas of the central strike look more like AU-50 than AU-53. I suspect that PCGS would give undue weight to those areas, and read this coin as AU-50. If so, you very likely snagged an undergraded and undervalued coin.
Again, great coin and a fantastic finish to the collection!

@fortcollins in the cases you did not agree, in the situations you described with these types of coins, have you ever done a reconsider, and if you did, were you successful?
Thanks for all the comments!

Congratulations! I've had a good look and compared it to existing graded examples, I place it right in between XF45 and AU50, I think it will have been given one of those grades.

The photos suggest luster is pretty much limited to protected areas around date, stars, and legends. Soft detail may mostly be due to strike but I'm seeing wear on breast, wings, cap, and hair above brow. Looks solid for XF-45 and might make 50, especially if luster is stronger in-hand. Eye appeal is very good. Congratulations on completing your set!

Quote: @fortcollins in the cases you did not agree, in the situations you described with these types of coins, have you ever done a reconsider, and if you did, were you successful? I tried reconsideration on a couple of them, and PCGS didn't budge. I cracked a few out and sent them to NGC. About half came back higher, and a couple came back more than a point higher. None came back lower, but one lost its PL designation. (I didn't think it was PL in the first place.) EDIT: The last one that came back over a point higher was a mushy 1893-O. PCGS had it at VF-20. NGC came back at VF-35. Both were off. It was a weakly struck 30. I sold it to a longtime customer, who eyeballed it at 25/30. Quite the fiasco over $65-70.Now, except where authentication is really at issue, I just leave about any Morgan under $700-$750 raw. It saves the frustration. I've talked to some of the regional dealers, who had exactly the opposite experience, and cracked out NCG coins and received higher grades from PCGS. For me, the frustration always has been the slabbed New Orleans coins. Part of it may be that all the TPGs see so many Morgans and have so little time with each coin that they fall into a grading tempo and can't spend enough time with each coin. Maybe it's the old saying that familiarity breeds contempt. I think some of that can be seen with the 20th Century coins, too. How many Lincolns can anyone look at in a day before the eyes glaze over? *Shrug*

Try not to give this away too soon, but I only ask because 1 point could be $650 difference LOL
