My LCS has a junk box with four coins for a pound. I went in this morning but he hadn't got any interesting new stock in. I did spend quite a bit there last week. I looked through the junk bin and pulled out four items, including this large cent. In the gloomy light in the shop I couldn't even make out the date. When I got out my pound, the dealer said "No, you can have them for free today!" So here is my free 1805 Large Cent:

Are you going to try and conserve it? I would like to see it "cleaned up" John1

Quote: Are you going to try and conserve it? I haven't really thought about that yet. What would you suggest? The greeny stuff is quite encrusted on the coin: it's not like the slimy deposits you get when coins have been in vinyl envelopes. And the detail is worn practically flat - I'd be worried about losing any of what there is!

Very nice find! In the (2018) Red Book at AG-03 it lists for $45 US.

That is a coin that I can easily say cannot be harmed any further by a cleaning. Surf up "cleaning copper coins" on the Net and see what methods are suggested.

I personally would keep it as-is and have it remind you of that story. Do what you like, but I am curious about the conservation...

I think it would be safe to soak in 100% pure acetone for half an hour or so and see what happens. Just to be clear, do not attempt to clean it. John1

Nice find! Looks stable. I would likely not treat it at all. Alternatively, leave it in VerdiCare for 20 minutes, rinse and dry. I would not pick at it or rub it in any way.
