Hey all! I snatched a beauty from the wild today, and looking to see if anyone is more familiar than I am about this one... It's 1974 S, and I thought it was an RPM. I hopped on Variety Vista and noticed they didn't have a listing in RPM's for the 1974-S. Searched online and found a link (back to Variety Vista), and found that some believe that this is the only known example of a "Re-Punched Mint Mark Punch"? Something about midway thru '74 they switched from the rounded serif "MMS-008", over to the straight serif "MMS-009". (This mint mark is the MMS-009 from what I can tell.) I've learned a lot in my first 1 1/2 years of serious collecting, but this one I can't seem to find much info about... Just wondered if anyone knew more about this one. Like, the roundabouts value and what companies recognize this variety. I'm hoping to get a handful of coins slabbed later this year with PCGS, and wondering if this one worth sending off. Thanks in advance everyone and hope everyone is having the same lucky streak on wild finds that I've been having here in W.Va.! Be safe everyone! PS- Here's the link I found on it... http://varietyvista.com/25%20What%2...201974-S.htm I tried to get best pics I could with phone, but under the loupe in person, its definitely a match. Thanks again! Edited by Rambles 08/24/2021 05:22 am

Yeah, I noticed that too. Pretty much only info I could find was this link. http://varietyvista.com/25%20What%2...201974-S.htmI figured it was just an RPM until I read this link about it being believed to be only instance of a "Re-Punched mint mark punch". Never even heard of it till I stumbled upon this one. Maybe it will be my nest egg coin and in 40 years from now be selling for $25,000. . Yeah right.. Lol. Idk how anyone concluded that it was the punch it's self. I guess because of the mint mark style transition that year?

If I am interpreting this correctly, it sounds like the punch itself was re-tooled and that is what we are seeing on the resulting cents. That is interesting.

Probably more of a damaged punch issue. Hammering the punch into a tempered die, alters even a tempered punch.

I know right?! I read that thing twice and I'm trying to picture why they would try and refurbish the actual punch itself. I kinda think it's a regular RPM. Lol

Here's something interesting someone mentioned that other thread... It's a mystery alright... Lol. https://www.coincommunity.com/go/li...%20Punch.htm Also, it's hard to tell in my pic, but I immediately noticed the light color mine is. Just lighter shade of bronze than that I normally see in 1970's Red coins. When I looked at the pics on the other thread, his example has that same hue of bronze too. Maybe my eyes are loosing their spunk at 37. Lol.

In MY opinion, the mint marks at not a match at all! If you look at the lower half of the S, VV's is much thinner than yours, which is very thick in the lower half. Definitely not a match.
