So I purchased a new copy of the 2022 Red Book. Looking at the value of various coins, it made me wonder how often this changes and what is a good rule of thumb for purchasing the new editions? Thank you.

Never use Red Book for values, they are out of date as soon as the book is released. Use ebay sold values and http://www.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices/fmv.shtml

Still using my 1998 edition for mintages and background info. That's the last one I purchased.

Agree on values. They are almost always high retail and outdated by the time it prints.

I get a new one every few years for updated information, especially the recent mintage numbers.
Rest in Peace

I just bought the Mega Red last year from Ollies (thanks to a hot tip by a CCF member). My previous version was my 26th edition (bought new) that replaced my 14th edition that I acquired used 3 or 4 years prior.

Agreed that it's good to have a copy at hand, but no need to replace every year (or even every 10 years.). My last update was a clearance 2018 Red Book.

For the regular Red Book, I used to purchase every 5 years or so (and, as others mentioned, the pricing information is not really useful other than in some relative sense). However, since the Mega Reds came out, I've bought every one of those for the large amount of supplemental information they provide in each one.

Yikes, the world has changed a bit since I got my '79 RedBook. If I go back to actively collecting US coins, I probably should upgrade.

Every US coin collector should buy and read every page - especially the early parts of the Red Book. It will teach you more than you know. Now I'm not saying you need to read every mintage and price, but at a minimum the header information on each coin, and scan over the mintage's, learn what's rare, see the more known varieties, and the beginning us an amazing look into our countries early history. I usually get one every 5 years now, most come free at various banquets or shows I attend, I can't remember the last time I paid for one.

I've got my 2020 and that will hold me out for long enough. Maybe in 10 or 20 years I'll buy another just have a printed visual of whatever the mint got themselves into in a few decades but I already use ebay and PCGS for prices and google for pictures, so all the book does is put it in a nice single place. No new copies for me!

I have the 2020 and 2022, I should have waited a few more years but wanted the 2019 ASE mintage.
