Does the toned spitting lady have a chance to hit AU-50 with a 45 degree rotation and a obv-only 11 o'clock rim ding failing to protrude into the denticles surrounding the field? The jump in retail price goes from $257 for XF-40 to $545 for AU-50! Or am I in left field on this one just hoping to make the big catch for the $10 I've got into this one while at a fast moving auction when everyone was asleep? Edited by mdpmedia 09/23/2021 7:13 pm

Rim damages limits this to a details coin, I'm guessing.

Additionally to the rim damage, I see a couple major scratches across Miss Liberty. I agree with details, and will settle on XF Details

The rim dent alone will detail it, and the reverse looks like some colorful retoning after an old cleaning. XF details for me.

Not just rim damage, devices are seriously hit too. 1) Hit on the shield below the "E", 2) Liberty's left abdomen hit, 3) Cleavage hit, 4) "L" on the reverse hit, etc.

Can't add anymore other than "agree with all of the above". XF Details as well here.

No jump in value in this case; I agree with the above comments.

A great type coin anyway. I would be happy to fill that empty spot in my type set with it. While we are being honest, I'd say you got it for around 90% off, give or take, despite the issues.

$10?!!! I'd fall all over myself to buy that coin for $10, what a find regardless.

The damage is a really bad issue. But the coin is one that a type set person could afford. But the coin maybe considered a cull because of the damage. It should go great on ebay as some newbies would ignore the damage, just to have an older coin. A grading company would probably body bag it and mark it as "Genuine". Mention the damage on the rim and see where it would go? It would be a problem coin.

Because of the small size and thin planchet, fish scales get some leeway with dings and scratches. The scratches on the shield and next to Miss Liberty's head, by themselves, would not detail this coin. The deep contacts on the abdomen and the rim hit, however, detail this one.
EF details sounds right. The general rule of thumb is that details coins are somewhere in the ballpark of half the price of a straight grade. Here, I would expect a bit larger cut in value, because the knocks are on the obverse and evident. IMHO, it's still at least a $40-$50-ish filler type coin, so you definitely should come out OK on a $10 purchase.
