I hope this is ok to post this question here..Do the dies at the mints have different device sizes, I know to look for enlarged devices but there seems to be different size devices from the same mints..example below are two 1983 P and two 1983 D LMC's. First two are P mint.

I'm thinking die wear from polishing out die clashes, others should jump in and give their opinion.

Thankyou I was wondering if all the dies are supposed to be the same or if the thickness varies from die to die at times

I'm fairly sure different years all have different sized fonts, I think you need to compare cents from the sa.e year for comparison.(it's tough for me because I don't have doubles of many different years so nothing to compare to properly)

Ahh, and no. When devices are over polished they would be smaller(thinner) Die Deterioration would make them larger. So depending the die state they can be smaller or larger. Also circulation flattening can enlarge the devices

No just the opposite, I'm sure Coop will come along with his ed. photos.
Also On early die state LMCs the Memorial will have many steps leading up to Abes statue, as the die is polished the steps will lessen.

@greasyfingers, that's news to me, I'm aware grease from polishing can partially clog the devices causing them to be smaller. It makes sense that polishing the devices would flatten and enlarge them . Coops explanations are always great.

Device sizes have nothing to do with which Mint the coin may have come from.
It has everything to do with what type of die variety it happens to be struck from.

So there are several die varieties at each mint then ....Im trying to understand how to tell an extra thick device but if there are different thickness struck there is no actual starting point or standard thickness...you just have to be able to recognize the different die states somehow?
