Quote: I will probably have Wexler help me with this You should be able to send him the photos you posted here on CCF. But he might want to see it in hand. John1

With how many people said yes to this one, I'm afraid to say I don't see a doubled ear. A lot of glare from the lighting of the USB scope, but I can't make out any discernable doubling. Quote: You mentioned you found a whole roll like this which has me thinking it is in fact doubling. This is a good point. Now with OBW and brand new rolls it is not unusual, in fact it's actually likely, for there to multiple examples of the same die in the one roll. But all 50 being the same die... I have never heard of or experienced that. It's just statistically unlikely. It would be great if this is a new DDO and I'm just missing something, but I'm not sure it is. Definitely let us know the results when you get this back from Wexler!

Jon, I have already emailed pictures to Wexler a few days ago. I haven't heard back yet. Tanman I also am not yet convinced this is a true doubled die. Something just seems off to me but I am still learning. I am sending this off for an expert's eye and results on what exactly this is.

Glad to see someone is using this inverting of images idea. But now seeing the affect across the face, Note the nose and under the beard. All going in the same direction as the earlobe. Looks like it could be Machine Doubling. But it does extend further.

Does Machine Doubling occur on multiple coins in the same way? So far I have found a total of 63 of this penny with the ear lobe appearing to be doubled or machine doubled. I am about halfway through this brand new box of 2021 pennies I had my bank order for me.

I disagree with Machine Doubling. It is possible for a die to consistently produce the same Machine Doubling during consecutive strikes. But again all 50 coins from a roll being struck from one die is highly unlikely. I think this is potentially a lighting issue (lighting is too strong and there are too many sources) combined with these coins being lustrous and new. An optical illusion in a way. Would love to be proven wrong though, again let us know the results! Inverting colors in images in very unhelpful in my opinion. It's not going to reveal something that wasn't there already. And whenever someone posts an image with inverted colors, 100% of the responses are "MD" which doesn't seem right. I feel like you won't get the most accurate answers without natural-color pics. Others will definitely disagree with me on this.

I'd like one of these when you are ready to sell them. Please PM me when you have a price. Cool find!
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

Do you have any advice on how to get pictures where the lighting doesn't affect the appearance of the coin? For the pictures, I actually had the light on the lowest/dimmest setting. As well as so far from the box a received I have found a total of 63 of these coins with the same earlobe appearance and am about halfway through the box

I do not think lighting would create what we are seeing here. It is easy to tell the light source or sources are coming from different directions, in different pics, because of the shadowing but it is still there, in every pic. Given the information that we have been given, I do not think it can be MD either, if that many are actually the same. At the end of the day, until this gets into a professional attributors hands, it's all conjecture. I would love to see it listed though, Cecilia.

That was pretty subjective when I said your lighting was too much. Your photos are good, it is just really tough to get perfect pics of stuff this small. If you do want to improve lighting a bit, you can try to diffuse your lights by covering them with some tissue paper. It's difficult to do that with USB scopes but that's what I did with mine before I got an optical scope.
I also just noticed there is a die crack across Lincoln's forehead on the coin you took pictures of. It's a fairly common spot for die cracks, but it could be a useful die marker for determining whether what you're finding is from the same die or not.

@Tanman2001 - Do you accept possible varieties for attribution? Maybe Cecilia Sowinski can send you one to take a look at.
