@old, just to be clear, are you talking about the left wheat sheaf? Looks like it only contacts the rim on one side for this coin.

Wouldn't that be a die crack? I see where it touches the rim. That could lead to a die break right?

Yes I think a die crack is a bit better description, although as the crack progressed, it would have produced pre-cuds on coins soon enough.

I don't see it here but pay attention to when you have a bug on the left wheat leaf and many times, there will be a corresponding BIE.

When the die crack connects to the rim on the upper area, then the die will break down more and progress to the rim to rim crack, then to the Retained Cud and sometimes to the Cud on the reverse. But several hundreds of thousands of coin could be struck before all of that happens. So the die is just experiencing a flesh wound at this point. More cents to be struck though before retirement or death to the coin when a Cud happens. (Thus why there are so few strikes on a Cud. It is end of life and the die, dies)

And, looking at the last 5 in 1955, it appears you have an emerging poor man's doubled die (early Die Deterioration). All-in-all, a classic '55 Wheat cent, with the warts to show for it.

Nice find. Love the stages of these progressions. Something in favor of using the dies way to much.
