Hello, I've been a coin collector for about 15 years. I love and have several Morgan's and decided to buy the new 2021 series. However, I'm a little surprised NGC would grade this 2021 D Morgan a 70 when the (possible die crack?) error was visible to the naked eye on the reverse. Need advice - should I return it (I am able to exchange it)? Should I keep it? Does it devalue? Does it increase the value? Thank you to anyone who can help and I plan to participate with others posts as often as I can! Hopefully I resized the photos and still kept the quality as it took quite a bit to knock them down to 300kb.

Very very interesting.. judging by the bumpy look of it, I'm actually convinced it's not a die crack but a very thin piece of rim finning that detached partially and is now pushed up against the face of the coin. Note how the little bumps in it are identical and placement to the reeding on the edges of the coin
Feel free to call me Will.

I have to agree with thedollarman. You can actually see were it disconnected from the rim in your reverse close up. Just inside the left of the image is one section still connected. to the CCF!

I'd suggest hanging onto it. I agree with the finning observation. To some, could be a unique, somewhat desirable piece in the years to come.

Is the "finning" embedded in the coin or "floating" on top like a loose wire?

I think that this is potentially a desirable and interesting error; that plus a 70 grade tells me you should hang on to it.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to look at and respond to my post. I thought it was interesting since I have never seen such a thing and to be graded 70 I may just hang onto it. It's part of the full set so I may see if I can just purchase that one by itself instead of exchanging it. In response to thedollarman- thank you for opening my eyes - I did not even see the "detachment" you found and looking at it closer I agree with what you're saying. Now time to decide if I want to keep that as part of the "perfect" collection set, send it back for an exchange or try and purchase another one to keep this as a side coin. By the sounds of the responses, it sounds like people would keep it. Response to Dave700x - thank you for the warm welcome! Response to ijn1944 - thank you, you may have convinced me to hang on to it :) Response to EDM - it appeared to be "embedded", however, after closer inspection and in agreement with the other comments I believe it may be a piece detached and perhaps "loosely embedded". Response to KenKat - thank you! I may just hang on to it and see what happens later! I appreciate everyone's responses! Doesn't look like my first image of the graded side was posted for some reason so I included it here.

Just wanted to say again thank you to the other two who responded! Morgans dad and Jbuck! I think you've convinced me to keep it! I'm attempting to buy a second one to have it part of the collection with the other mints and have this one separate.
This is such a great and useful forum I'm sad I didn't find it earlier in my coin collecting years but so happy I found it now! Everyone seems nice, welcoming and helpful and I hope to help others in the same way.

It appears there are a few 2021-D " Morgan dollars" with a similar struck thru sheared rim fragment appearance. I saw some pictures posted on the CU forums. Definite keeper in my book.

It's a keeper. Or, I would keep it. It is a unique coin with an MS70 grade.

I had one of these coins with a very similar what looked like crack. I looked at coin again last night with loop and appears that the metal was starting to float on the end in field. At that point I decided to open capsule and with a post it note I slid it under the piece and it popped right off and coin was as should be. Just FYI to all. I posted pic of it originally in a thread but now scrap metal gone.

Thanks MD! Would have preferred a die break, but IT IS, WHAT IT IS! This one looks a lot the same but beautiful coin either way.
