Hi All. I am working on my nickel photography since last post was not great. So I closed all the blinds and tried to filter with cloth and kept letting light in at various angles, set up books around the microscope to block out light and that seemed to help...geez! Anyway, not any examples of DDR's for this year as far as my research showed but this sure looks like a good one to me. The Jefferson Memorial seems to have some depth to it. Word of caution: I have been wrong before :) Thank you for all your observations. BTW, John1 is approaching a milestone, can't wait for the contest

Yes I agree that it is a coin struck from a tired die.

Cons, Your photos here are very good . Your coin looks like mostly DDD and maybe a bit of a Grease Filled Die issue. As to my contest, there won't be one. Sorry all John1

I just checked the two sites and no DDR's listed that year on both sites. But as already mentioned it is die wear that is the issue. First note the die flow lines on the surface of the coin? That is the first clue for an aging die. Thus what you were seeing was enlarged devices. This is caused by die wear on the reverse die. The coin probably has been at least once before to remove the fist set of die flow lines. At the time when your coin was struck, the flow lines are appearing a second time as the die ages. But if the die had been polished a second time, the devices would have been shorter is size and height. But it is not a doubled die, just die wear showing on the individual outside/inside parts of the devices from die wear striking many coins during its life. (And still has more to go yet before retirement) But it get even worse: Just part of the die aging process. Used until retirement of the dies.
