Hello. All I am new to coin collecting. I have been going over quarters and found a 1965 5.5 gram USA quarter. Did some research and it is 5.5 grams suggesting it is non silver. It does have what appear to be a printing error wondering if anyone has seen something like this before. Don't want t get my hopes up as after looking on google some sites like Etsy list quarter errors for 50 thousand . Specifically the letter E is off or is it just damaged? Thank you all!

to the CCF First, do not believe what you see on Etsy. Second, coins are minted or struck, currency is printed. Your coin is just damaged, it has taken a hit pushing the metal. An error can only occur during the striking of the coin and what you have could not occur then.

@john, first welcome to CCF. Second, you are correct that at 5.5 g this quarter isn't struck in silver. Of course the US quarters minted in 1965 for circulation were all clad (just like this one). This quarter is only worth face value.

Yes. Post-strike damage. And, don't believe what you see on Etsy concerning super valuable error coins.

As everyone has already said, just PMD. Good rule of thumb is, if you can think of any way that the coin could be made to look that way without it being part of the minting process, then it is not a mint error. This eliminates mosts dents, dings, and scrapes like this immediately.

[ia with above comments The US Mint stopped making regular circulation silver coins in 1964. Starting 1965 the coins (except for nickels and cents) were clad (copper core, with a copper/ nickel cladding

Yep. PMDI agree that Etsy is not a reliable source to determine value.
