Here's another coin owned by my 97 year old father-in-law. This one I did remove from his original holder since he had it in a nickel-sized paper holder which was too small for the coin.

There is a mark next to the 1 in the date and fly specks on the hair. It has full luster.

He bought this in October 1986 and paid $250 for it.

Definite wear on the high points, I'll say an AU-58 slider.

I think it is fabulous coin. Not really scarce in AU, but a desirable date nonetheless. Those gobs in the hair can be minimized, though maybe not entirely removed, through conservation.

While strictly applied math would say it isn't worth slabbing, the fact that it has already been in the family for 35 years means some special care might be warranted. Personally I'd send it in for grading and conservation. If you do, I'd bet it comes back AU-58.

AU-58, original, and attractive. I agree an acetone soak couldn't hurt. If it doesn't come off on its own, the dirt can likely be dislodged by gently poking with a toothpick.

Slider. AU-58 to MS-62 range. Luster is fantastic, which has me leaning a bit more toward the MS-62 end of that range.
