I was doing a roll search today of a group of truly spectacular 1965 cent rolls. Almost all the coins in the hoard are cameo strikes and it looks to me like I have found quite a few very high grade coins. This one just poked out at me from the roll. It has been absolutely unseen or untouched since it went in the roll in 1965. The silver metal appears to be inset into the coin and the silver and copper surfaces are neither indented nor proud from what they should be. It basically looks to me like there is something silver in the planchet. Thoughts? Retained strike through? *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Denomination to Title. It's not a retained struck through. I'm guessing it's something on the coin. Acetone could possibly get rid of it. No way this could be post mint though imo.

This looks legit to me. Nice find! I am pretty sure SPP has a few struck through silver flakes and I have a struck through copper flake somewhere. Here is a link to an ebay listing for a struck through copper flake 325051373318

Yes, I think this is what it is. Lousy photo, but the silver has very irregular edges and it does look like silver as opposed to say nickel. Maybe a scrap left from striking of 10 cent coins on the same machine....?

I think this sort of thing is really tough to determine without really good photos. I can't see any defining edge making it just look like something on the coin rather then struck through retained. Coin in hand is best judgement so if you can see an irregular edge where the silver and copper edges join then could be legit.

So, just to update, I finished searching the 6 rolls today. I found 4 or 5 other coins with pinhead size pieces of the same material imbedded in them. Also, out of the 300 coins, 299 had great strikes with very many cameo and heavy cameo coins. There was one that was very different however.....still a nice strike, but it had a speck of the material imbedded in it and hand also had heavy doubling on "DGR", "ELIZA" and the entire top of the effigy. I suspect that this is all related?

Could this have something to do with the chrome on the die

Definitely legit, I have several examples myself. Almost looks like it struck through something used to treat the dies? Kind of looks like silver wash, but I have no idea why it is on the 1c coins.
