Ever since I was able to get back inside the banks, I have kept a record of the number of rolls I have searched (excluding halves and dollar coins) and the number of coins I have kept . Between June to October, I had a different bank account with different trends. I searched 238 rolls of pennies, 160 rolls of nickels, and 160 rolls of dimes. From the 238 rolls of pennies I have kept 51 wheat cents, 20 2009 cents, and 26 canadian cents plus 1 George VI penny. From the 160 rolls of nickels I have kept 2 Buffalo nickels, 1 wartime nickel, 14 canadian nickels, and 258 pre-59 nickels (I found 179 pre-59 nickels in 7 rolls. I found 79 in 153 rolls.) From 160 rolls of dimes I found 6 roosevelt silver dimes, 9 canadian dimes, plus 1 silver canadian dime. I got a new bank account last October. Since then I was able to search a lot more rolls. I searched 466 rolls of pennies, 324 rolls of nickels, and 85 rolls of dimes. 15 of the 466 rolls of pennies were uncirculated. From the other 451 rolls of pennies I have kept 105 wheat cents, 54 2009 cents, and 80 canadian cents plus a George VI penny and 3 1967 centennial pennies. 12 of the 324 rolls of nickels were uncirculated. From the other 312 rolls of nickels I have kept 156 pre-59 nickels, 4 wartime nickels, 2 Buffalo nickels, 35 canadian nickels, plus an 1895 V nickel and a clipped planchet. From 85 rolls of dimes, I have found absolutely nothing. I have found 6 other foreign coins altogether.

So in summary: The rate of wheat pennies remains at 1 every 200 to 250 pennies, 4 or 5 rolls. The rate of 2009 pennies is about 1 out of every 500 pennies, 10 rolls. The rate of finding canadian pennies where I live is about 1 out of every 300 or 400 pennies, 6 or 8 rolls. The rate of finding Nickels dated before 1959 is about 1 out of every 80 nickels, 2 rolls. I usually find either a wartime nickel or a Buffalo nickel once every 50 rolls. And the rate of finding a canadian nickel is usually one every ten rolls. I think it is a fluke thing that I haven't been finding silver dimes lately. Usually one out of every 1000 dimes is a silver dime.

Always nice to see careful stats like this. Quote: The rate of wheat pennies remains at 1 every 200 to 250 pennies, 4 or 5 rolls. Looking just at the arbitrage from swapping out wheat cents worth on average 5 cents each with face value cents, and only including search time of 1 second per cent in terms of time investment, I think that this works out to about 40¢/hour. Does that sound about right?

Nice stats! I'm thinking about keeping all the nickels I find seeing how they're now the metal is worth twice face value.

Nice statistical data. My ADHD would never allow me to keep such detailed information.

So tell us, has it been worth all the effort? Including lugging the coins back and forth to the bank?

Nice job keeping stats. I like reading about the probabilities and seeing the comparisons from one type to another.

I keep similar detailed records but in other aspects of the hobby. I think it is interesting, fun, and helps you make statistically better decisions.
You should keep customer wrapped and bank wrapped rolled coins in separate categories, so you can see what type gets you the best finds.

Quote: You should keep customer wrapped and bank wrapped rolled coins in separate categories, so you can see what type gets you the best finds. Virtually all of the coins I got from my old bank were custom wrapped. Most all of the coins I get from my new bank are machine wrapped and in boxes. There was one box of custom wrapped pennies I got recently. There weren't any wheat pennies in it at all. Machine wrapped rolls usually don't waver at all from the usual rate. You'll never find someone's Wheat penny collection in machine wrapped rolls.
