Hello there. I am new to the community. I have a 1943 steel cent that, believe it or not, looks like it was struck a 1798 draped bust. I know that is a very long window between these two coins however on the reverse of the 1943 there is a face and it looks as if liberty and the year are faintly visible. Ive been trying through email to get a second opinion or verification but cant get ahold of anyone. I have a lot of pictures. Here are some. Should I send this coin to be graded if this us the case or is it too faint to be anything at all. I started collecting only recently but have found some cool finds. Does anyone see what I do?

@jam, first welcome to CCF. Second, the answer is no, your steel cent was not over struck on a 18th Century Large Cent or Silver Dollar. It's all Pareidolia.

Does it stick to a magnet? Then it can't be overstruck on a 1798 coin.

A little difficult to tell given the small images, but Pareidolia seems to be doing its magic. Agree with Spence.

Agree with the upthread. Pareidolia within the toning/staining. What you are proposing is not possible, given how long those dies were out of use.

That's quite a stretch. Think about now how large a draped bust cent is - all the devices couldn't possibly fit on the face of a tiny Wheat cent.

Glad you can ask us, . with the above, paridolia coming into play; it can do strange tricks with our eyes.
Rest in Peace

What ever stain is there, it is on the surface of the coin. On the real deal, it would be raised on that area. I'm not seeing anything on your coin.

Certainly one of the most illogical proposals I've ever seen on this forum.

He never said a draped bust cent, he just said a draped bust. And with the size of the coin, and the color he was probably intending a draped bust DIME.

Of course it isn't and it is still Pareidolia.
