Common Coins but nice strikes and minimal contact marks. Any thoughts on possible grades. The 81-S has very colorful toning Aqua and dark red/brown not really seen in the photo, great luster highly reflective fields.

Just curious - what's your reason for wanting to get these graded? I used to collect baseball cards and there were a ton of people that seemed to think grading was the only way to go. I haven't seen that level of obsession with grading in the coin collecting world, but I am always curious when people throw the idea out there.

The 1881-s appears to have major pvc residue on the edges so it would most likely come back in a "body bag" as for the 1898 o it is hard to grade because it is so bright... almost looks polished.
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

Agree the '81-S will likely not straight-grade as it stands.

Very nice coins, I especially like the 1881-S. I don't think these are worth submitting. The 1898-O appears to have been dipped.

to the CCF. I'm glad to see you're excited about Morgan dollars!

The first coin has very dark toning and fingerprints, and the sharpness grade looks mid to high AU.

The second coin is Uncirculated, but has almost certainly been dipped (dunked in silver coin cleaner) at some point.

Although both coins definitely have value above their bullion (silver content), neither one, in my opinion, would be worth the $20-$30 per coin to have it graded.

Earle - thanks for sharing that link. This part should really make people think:

"If you take a PCGS graded coin slabbed as MS64, break it out, and resubmit it to PCGS, you are never guaranteed the same grade again. The slabbed coin might come back MS62 (extreme and a bad day for graders), 63, 64, 65, 66 (extreme and a great day for you!). This is b/c the process is all subjective: No scientific/verifiable standards or methods are used."

The advice given to buyers is to buy the coin, not the holder. Why would that advice be given? It's because of what's described above. Yes, there is a perceived value in the services of companies like NGC and PCGS, but it's just not something I would use again

I have used NGC before for a 5-coin submission a little over 10 years ago. I used them mainly to validate a couple of Peace dollar VAMs that I had cherry picked plus a couple of other coins. I can't recall being unhappy with anything as far as the service or results, I just don't plan to do it again.
Rest in Peace

to the forum @BillD60!

My first question is were these images taken by you and did you use a flatbed scanner?

neither coin is slab worthy both look like they would pull a details designation. both common.

the 81(S) looks like ED (environmental damage from improper storage or had a bath in grease or something) and there are finger prints everywhere.

the 98(O) has been dipped and/or polished

always check here before spending $
