Is this a folded over Rim Fin or struck through? The die is slightly misaligned and you can see the seperation in the rim about where the metal bunches up. It then proceeds about 1/3 around the rim and a tiny bit again at the "E" in "E Plu". Worth putting in a flip?

Coin wrapping flattens down the thin ones on the first wrapping.

In the short time, I think about six months, that I have been searching nickel bank rolls, I have seen this often. I personally think it's a common damage of some sort, maybe vending machines? I've seen it way too much for it to be anything else, in my opinion. Maybe someone who searches nickels will have more info.

Note the two ends of these areas. You can see the tapering out of this flattened fin areas. Just like the coin above it. This would have been a very tall fin when it was struck. but now it's gone. Most of the time, the flattening is all you see on these.

The fin makes the edge look thicker on that side of the edge. Note this example. Again note that it tapers on the outside edge of the rim/edge area.

coop, so you are saying this is a flattened out finned rim, this far into the field? I have seen this a lot, in the short time I have been searching bank roll nickels. Is a finned rim this common on nickels, maybe certain years? I just thought it odd to see it so often, to be this.

makecents, I've also seen many and wondered the same thing, must be a huge Rim Fin if it folds down and extends into the fields of the coin, so like you I'm thinking some sort of damage

Does the area at UNITED look like it could "flake" off or is it just raised metal from the strike?

Look at the base of the ED (UNTED). The vertical legs of the letters seem to come to an abrupt end and the bottoms are missing (polished or grease-filled?).

Could this be a case of die polishing and/or Die Deterioration where the edge of the die leading into the rim gutter has deteriorated and flaked away?

When they are that extreme, they are very thin and tall. So the closing of the rolls flattens them. It has probably been in several rolls through the years, but probably the first rolling of the thin/tall fin was flattened before the first roll was opened.

I too have seen a lot of this on nickels. I don't know what it is or have not heard a good explanation of what it is. So I just throw them back. A Rim Fin would effect a small area, this goes into the devices.
