Hello, This coin was very likely cleaned and possibly mounted in a bezel, but what concerns me is it's overweight by .18 although circulated... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! R.     Edited by Roma2021

@roma, while determining real vs fake is beyond my abilities on this one, I agree being overweight is not a good sign. Also, I'm concerned about the smoothed over section of the rim. While that could be from a removed mount, it could also be from a sprue (indicating this piece was cast and therefore definitely a fake).

@spence, that was my concern ... And some research indicates that's likely ... Although some says jewelry bezel.... Curious to hear what those familiar with the coin have to say....

I presume the measure is accurate? If you placed certified calibration mass standards of 27 grams on your scale or balance, what would it show?  |

@albert. The scale is usually close. I just weighed a 100 gram silver bar ... Came up 99.99, repositioned then 99.98; repositioned and it came up 100.00
My concern is the weight, for a circulated coin, and the edge damage... Curious what you think.

Having no microscopic photos, I wonder if a pendant attachment was soldered to the coin but removed afterward, thus accounting for such a small amount of left over material which slightly adds weight?

@albert, unfortunately, one of two things may be true - 1) the coin may be an authentic former jewelry piece, or 2) the edge damage is evidence of casting. Although, examining the coin in person, it does not look like a cast coin. I used the shop's loupe - having left my at a previous shop (d'oh!) so I will go back this week and reexamine.
It's priced at a little below $42, which seems retail for this coin.

Piece is genuine, though, as seen, apparently ex-mount. Those familiar with Cap & Ray 8R will not be bothered by slight variance from "official" weight, especially with branch mints like Alamos... even with later dates like this. For example: http://numismatics.org/collection/1...5.19?lang=en |

Hi @Reales... thank you! It's priced at about $42. What do you think? It's a beautiful coin, of course, but how much does the ex-mount impact value. I'm still learning these nuiances.
