That is bizarre surface toning on this quarter. Not sure what would produce that. Also, can you please add the date of this quarter to the title or at least to the thread? That helps us down the road with search functionality. Thx.

It is us who require more info, we need the date and clear photos of both sides.

As a general rule, "weird toning" like this on modern base-metal coins is usually the result of environmental damage. This kind of pattern I would imagine is likely the result of (for example) a coin sitting at the bottom of a swimming pool, or chlorinated fountain, that has an uneven surface; the uneven surface allows for different levels of exposure to the chlorinated water at different points on the coin. Or maybe it was buried in a pile of leaves.

Much better photos. Looks like some sort of environmental toning, hard to say exactly what.

The surface peel is showing that some coating is on the coin and now peeling off. A stain will not peel off, but affects the coins surface.

I think yes, some sort of coating, could be a cup holder coin with coke and milk shake stain who knows? But I like the coin, I would keep it.

Looks like a design or pattern was applied to this coin long ago and found its way back into circulation and is now wearing off.
