I owned an old farm house in New Hampshire built circa1756 and one owner added a second story in the 1840s. I was digging around the foundation and found this. I guess it was a tradition to place a coin somewhere as good luck. Tell me what you think of this coin. I think it looks very nice.

Woah, what a find! As to grade, I estimate a high AU-58 at least . You will also be happy to know that this is the small date variety, and RETAIL value is approximately $350.00ish plus or minus some... I would also say on avoid cleaning this coin in any way unless you ask us on this site on how to conserve a beauty coin like this...

The nick of copper showing is probably where the shovel hit. Is this a small date ?, Also trying research I noticed some go by N-x, where x is a number and I don't know what that means, any help appreciated.

what an amazing find! you might want to see if you can metal detect the rest of the area. there could be more treasure!
a agree that this is the small date. the N-# is referencing the dies that were used to make the coin. the dies are uniquely identifiable and people collect the series by die marriages. N is for Howard Newcomb who extensively cataloged the middle and late date large cents. there are 16 different die marriages for the small date 1846.
i think the coin has XF details but I think it would slab as environmentally damaged.

Congratulations on a beautiful find! I think you should slab it anyway, even if it comes back as "details," and keep it as a relic of your house.

A slab would make for a nice looking way to display it. But check out the costs before you do, making sure to take into account the membership fees etc., and make sure you take the estimated grade you get here and check ebay for slabbed and SOLD coins of this grade and exact date/type on ebay to get an idea of selling value if the gamble of slabbing comes out the best scenario. If you want to avoid high costs, check out ANACS - about 15.00. Normally on this forum people say if the coin is not worth 150.00 then slabbing is not worth the cost. But I also like to point out that unless you just want a slab, you are losing a lot of potential value in YOUR pocket and giving it to the company for their opinion (no verifiable or scientific standards used in grading). Nice find. Let us know if you do grade it and the result!

Wow! You'd think a copper in the ground so long would oxidize more, especially in the New Hampshire dampness. Would expect something to look better in an arid climate where soils stay drier.

That looks amazing for coming out of the ground. You should definitely metal detect your property. You will get many, many hours of fun, and probably quite a few interesting finds.

That is a stunning ground find @sur. Well done! Consider getting a metal detector and see what else previous owners of your property might have left behind.

surfacewave, Nice find. May I suggest you put it in an Air-Tite capsule so you can show the coin to friends and family.Metal detecting your property sounds like a good idea and fun. John1
