I have several damaged PCGS slabs that are in desperate need of a reholder.
I'm only going to upload photos of one slab that should make my point.

I had an outdoor tradeshow where the sun was doing its job that day. Because I had several cases to attend to, I wasn't paying close attention to the one that had these slabbed coins in it. These cases were the standard 4 inch tall cases with the rectangular glass piece hinged on top to allow viewing etc.

At the end of the show I couldn't believe that the slabs actually melted internally. I don't ever remember reading a PGS warning or comment about keeping the sun from contacting the slabs to avoid this problem.

When I called the representative, she told me to take a picture and to email it to them for review. What I am asking here is what to say in the email to convince them pick up the tab since I was never aware that any special care had to be taken in that type of environment.

I don't think they should pick up the tab on this one.. although it's possible they will I guess. It's kinda common knowledge that you shouldn't put collectables like this out in heat or harsh natural light for long periods of time.

I'd have to agree.

I agree, you'll have to cover the cost of re-slabbing.

If I was in QC in their end, I'd have enough questions that I might want to cover this just to learn. How hot did this have to get to happen? As a brand, PCGS might want to nip this in the bud.

If I was PCGS I would make you pay for it. Why would you put collectables out in the sun? Its also a common date, PR69 silver quarter, its not like its super expensive.

I'm in agreement with those above. At the end of the day, it is a soft plastic insert. Those types do tend to pick up and hold heat quite well as well as have a fairly low melting point.

Technically you melted it by exposing it to high temperatures. You should have to pay for the reholder IMO.

It seems like the general consensus is that I am guilty. My defense is that the other holders from PCGS and NGC did not melt and they had the same intensity and time spent under the sun in the display case.

I couldn't find any place where PCGS states that, "PCGS does not recommend our holders be exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period of time etc." Besides that excuse, I just wanted to throw in some other verbiage that could help plead my case since I have several of these damaged slabs.

Pay the reholder fee as they don't look sellable in their current condition. I cannot think of an explanation that would give PCGS the inclination to bear the cost.

Without a doubt you're at fault, and need to pay for the reholdering.

PCGS should not be liable for your negligence.

Direct sun spoils things, that's a fact. It is not recommended to keep any things for a long time in the open sun.

I agree with the consensus that PCGS should not pay for the re-holder.

What makes you think that PCGS should have a written disclaimer somewhere about not placing these in the hot summer sun under glass? My $250 Costa sunglasses did not come with a written warning to not store them on the dash in my car. It's kind of general knowledge that this is a bad idea.

Let us know how it goes for you when you hear back from them.

I'd imagine you're out of luck since the error was on your part in leaving them out in the sun.

Ouch!

You may get lucky and PCGS will investigate this to gain data on what their holders can handle (knowledge has value).

If not, I would not pay to re-holder it. I would crack it out or sell it as-is to an album filler.
