I was wondering if Machine Doubling can happen on on two sides of a device. This penny has what should be Machine Doubling in two directions with very odd splits on the date. What do you think.

Thanks John1. This was a strange one. While DDD might explain the doubling look, I don't think it explains the splits on the numbers and mint mark. The number 1 has a split at the top and bottom. The number 2 next to the 1 has a split at the bottom. It also has what I think is a raised doubling effect at the top. The D has a split at the lower left corner. I have always thought that splitting could show on Machine Doubling but not on DDD. Lighting was not an issue. I moved that coin in every direction I could and there was very little change. I'll do some more research on this. Thanks for the comment.

Hi hewart,

I am a newbie but I see what you are saying about the "splits" because I had something similar. It turned out to be glare doubling tho.

I thought mine was a DDO too when I was learning to use the microscope. You can see it all here. Make sure to scroll down to where I put a different pic of LIBERTY when I finally figured it out.

OK.. I'll give it one more try. However, I usually go through a series of tilts with the coin to try and eliminate the glare issues. I usually look for die chips and that method is often necessary to see a raised areas. This is a fairly new coin and reflections can be difficult to control. A bit of research does confirm that the area around the date are likely from Die Deterioration which will affect both sides of the devices. I'll report back later with better photos.

On micro images, a single light source is better. It allows light and shadows. When you use two lights, then you see two light directions on the devices. (often the glare hides what is actually their)

Using an inverted light color on the image, will often show what is really there on a glare issue with the light.

Note how the glare hides Machine Doubling on the coins image?

A single light source will show shadows better when you use the shadows to fall across the images hub doubling:

Let the shadow help show what you see better, to show what is going on, with your images. Light and shadows can be used to show what you are seeing better.

Thanks Coop. There is not much I can do with the built in lighting. I can turn it down or off. I may do that and see if I can add a single outside light source. Until then I'll just rely on the advice of the members on this site.

I removed the light and added a replacement after the first day. The LED light suck. The better setup is to use a single bulb source.

How I added to my new scope.

Is free with John DDD ( Die Deterioration Doubling) and also just how the light from the scope hits the coin etc. reflection Doubling.
As for the spilts they are nothing to focus on you'll see them a lot.
Doubled dies on shields you really want to look for extra thickness like the a "smudge" of the actually devices like the date is being pulled in a direction.
Also Denver's aren't good to search for doubled dies they just aren't there some doubled ears
And for 2021 d there are the banner doublings but other than that that's all.
Also for denver I've noticed the devices for some reason are normally extra thick when compared to Philly it's just how the denver die design is. Also the dies I feel they stretch the life out on them, bc I've come across a lot of 2020d and 2021d with mushy and clear Die Deterioration making devices extra thick don't be fooled.
