1982 D Large Date Penny What Are The Lines On Both Sides Of The Cent And Why Are The Letters Stretch

on my 1982 D large date cent what are the lines or streaks I guess and why are just the tops of the letters stretched and only effects the east and west sides of the cent and is it worth keeping

These are called "roller lines" and will gradually disappear as the coin wears.

alright thanks coinfrog and why are just the top end of the letters stretched and only the east and west side of the cent and not the north and south sides

@pris, looks to me like the outward distortion of the letters is from a tired die being used to strike this cent.

The term for the letters is Die Deterioration.

The die that struck your coin is showing it age. (Long in the tooth) The devices are moving towards the rim. (So it looks like this year had the Multi hub reverse dies) Seeing the devices move towards the rim, tells me that it is still the older die process. No cut off date on when the change over happened. So I'm figuring they didn't all switch at the the same time. Possible Obverse and Reverse change over happened at different times. (Or both processes were used the same years. They probably wanted to use up the already created dies first before changing to the new single squeeze dies? (I'm just reverse engineering this as I go)

i appreciate all your help so thank you am starting to understand how it all works but I have a long long ways to go yet and I have a lot more questions as I'm learning so you guys are stuck with me for a while longer lol
