I have a 2004 Jefferson nickel that has no date and most of the lettering is missing ... new to collecting and not sure if the coin is valuable.

@brin, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes that might be Struck Through Grease, but there seems to be quite a heavy amount of scratches. What does that coin weigh?

it appears to be Struck Through Grease, and with so much missing it does carry a premium

Glad to be here to learn....

The weight of the coin is the same as other nickels.... used a kitchen digital scale not sure if correct but read 0.165 oz.

The texture seams to be excessive so I think it is acid or chemical of some kind and not Grease Filled Die. Now that is only a guess but seams logical.

Acid would reduce the weight. BrinksCoins, if you plan on staying in the coin hobby you need to get a more accurate scale. One that goes down to 0.001 grams.

Weight will tell if it is a thinned planchet issue or not. 5 grams is normal for the nickel that year.
Thinned will be less than that.

I concur that this nickel was struck through "grease" on both faces.
