Hello everyone. Last week I won an ebay auction for a 1893 Morgan dollar for 416 dollars. I found the coin in the add very appealing, and considered it to be a solid XF coin. I eagerly waited all week and received the coin today. What came out of the package was nothing like what I purchased. It was vigerously scrubbed with a wire brush to try to hide the sand casted finish. This just makes me furious. I'm probably going to go through my whole collection soon to see if anything has slipped by. This one was easy to spot but I know the world is plagued with this stuff. I've been hesitant to purchase a Sigma. I always tell myself "man I could get a nice couple coins for 1000 bucks." Maybe it's time tho. It really stinks to think a new collector might have been duped. I'd bet my bottom dollar they've done it before and got away with it. I looked at their feedback and another buyer has accused them of selling counterfeit stamps. Anyways be careful out there folks.

@spence I didn't even bother contacting seller. I immediately filed a return and it was accepted. ebay is excellent about this. I started going through this sellers past sales and there is one for a 1893 CC Morgan. It sold for 640 bucks. The pics aren't very good but I'm fairly certain it is a fake also. There is a big blob on the U in United on the reverse.

Hello . I am new to the forum and I have enjoyed reading so far.

There are many counterfeit Morgans out there and many sellers of them. I have been burned in the past so I made it my mission to learn as much as I can about the genuine pieces. It's not easy and it's not fast but worth it. PCGS has a decent book on counterfeit detention by diagnostic marks imparted to a particular coin strike .

I'm sure most on this forum are aware of this but , I'm just putting it out there. I try to purchase slabbed rare coins so I can verify the coin through the TPGs by serial number. If I buy raw I need to see it up close or I request super clear pics of the coin and look on line for verifiable diagnostics before purchasing.

The good thing is buying through ebay will give you complete coverage against these shysters. I bought an 89cc on Craigslist from an out of state seller and as soon as I opened it I knew it was fake but the seller disappeared and a $800 coin is a $0 coin.

In the very early ebay days I bought a AU 58 93s Morgan for $1500 and the coin never arrived. Turned out the crook copied and pasted someone else's listing and offered buy it now so, I did. I had just joined pay pal and paid through that and while on the phone with pay pal was told that while they couldn't tell me about the funds in the sellers account, to file a claim NOW and, money was returned.

There have been several items that I have bought through ebay which are not as described and they always go to bat for the buyer in case of deceit or "wrong" description. If it looks too good to be true it usually is. Glad it worked out.

Here is a link to the ebay auction: 165723779343.

The listed coin and the counterfeit received coin are not the same. The OP left negative feedback that was well deserved.

I'm a firm believer that if a US coin catalogs more than $100 it should be in an NGC, PCGS, IGC or ANACS slab.

Kanga- I'm a firm believer in educating yourself.

I'm comfortable buying coins that aren't slabbed.

You need to educate yourself and develop your eye, it takes time.

Total reliance on a TPG is lazy and ignorant, they are fallible as well.

In fact, it gets to a point where you're so knowledgeable you won't always agree with the TPG, but rather conjure up your own grade.

You realize when you know how to think, it empowers you far beyond those who know only what to think.

im always interested in where different people draw the line for slabbing coins. $100 seems to be a pretty common number. does anyone have any idea how that became the standard advice?

i would be interested to find out if you bought something like 1,000 $100 raw coins sight unseen would you spend more on counterfeits than the cost of having those same coins certified?

I won't entirely disagree with you BUT there are exceptions.
In my case:
1. my primary collection is a US Type Set. That's WAY too many coin types to achieve an acceptable level of expertise, and
2. I'm 80 years old. I don't have the time left to achieve an acceptable level of expertise.

So I'll stick to slabs.
