The way it seems to effect the "T" (and perhaps even the E?) in UNITED makes me wonder if this occurred during the minting process?

Not sure if it's something or if it's nothing.

Any help would be appreciated!

Your first instinct was correct, it is damage.

@dis, first welcome to CCF. Yes that is just damage—not a mint error. It is odd though how the metal piled up in the gouge next to the rim.

The area near the rim is probably where the cladding was moved by Freddy.
