I think the Jovita Idar coin is a mess. It could have been a learning opportunity. It takes time just to grok her name. My opinion for what it is worth.

I don't care for the Jovita Idar at all. But I do like the Bessie Coleman and Kanaka' Ole designs.

You are being too nice concerning this design. I have no qualms saying it's downright ridiculous IMO. If the mint is trying to honor someone on a coin, why would they make it hard to ID that person due to the design? The contrast of open empty fields to cramming/distorting all the wording into a tight space made me think of something an 8th grader trying to be artistic would do. For an 8th grader, it would be fitting.

i like the Jovinta idar coin quite a bit. the contrast between the blank fields and the chaotic dress is quite striking. its going to look awesome in all the proof variants too.
i also like the Bessie Coleman. the part near the name with the horizontal bars is cool in a stylish and retro kinda way.
Elenors face though...

I agree the Jovita Idar coin is a mess. Yuck.
The traditionalist in me also balks at all the designs that say "25¢" instead of "quarter dollar". And the REAL traditionalist in me just wishes we'd go back to one quarter reverse and stick to it. I won't be collecting these, just like I don't collect any of the other "billion backs" quarters we've seen since 1999.

The Idar design is creative, though I'd have moved the boilerplate (EPU, etc.) off of her depiction and into the fields. That design effectively attributes the phrases EPU, quarter dollar, and similar to her. After decades of designs, I now long for the simplicity of original heraldic eagle.

Interesting designs. Thank you for sharing. I am not sure what to think about Jovinta Idar design just yet. I have to admit that the non-conformist rebel in me is a bit intrigued. However, I can also envision someone seeing <insert your least favourite coin design here> and saying "Hold my beer..."

I like the Bessie Coleman and the Edith Kanaka Ole. I'm not crazy about the 25c instead of quarter dollar though, but I guess I can live with it. I only collect the silver proofs, so I'm anxious to see how those two will look. The rest........

Quote: These were the candidate designs for Jovita Idar by the way... Thank you for sharing. There are at least two that I would have immediately preferred; that is, their appeal overrode my rebellious spirit.
