Cool!

It would be nice to find the other half! Probably reposing in someone else's collection out in Coinland —— somewhere!

That is nice, congrats on the acquisition! I was not sure what this was referred to as, until I found it on Error-Ref, "Split Planchet After Strike".

In my opinion - you seem to be missing a bit of your nickel (the back-side)

Very nice find! (If it were a cent coin - I would almost call it a woody too)

What causes this to happen? It is from a thicker lamination that causes this to split off post strike. (Thus the rim on the obverse or reverse) Even partial splits can be seen on the edges of the planchets called a clam shell:

These don't split off, because the lamination is not center on the planchet, they just start to show the split on the edges. This question was in my mind for years, until I figured out what happened. The lamination was thicker or thinner and the location of the cut of the blank would determine how it would end up. Then it all clicked on day how this happened.

CoopHome: What causes a split planchet? thick lamination errors and location of the clip of the blanks.
