The surface appears very grainy almost as if made of sand, it looks like a bad plating job but I thinks its unadulterated -- thoughts as to how this happens?

That is an interesting texture on this cent. I wonder if it isn't mechanical damage, such as from bead blasting.

An accurate weight might tell us something. Does have a 'cleaned' look.

I would suspect environmental damage - particularly acid. This cent did not leave the mint looking like that.

if acid, should the devices in IGWT and Liberty be corroded as well. The IGWT devices appear undamaged but for the surface allow issue?

To my eyes, they appear to have the tell-tale pebbly texture also. Perhaps not as obvious as the rest of the obverse, but the reverse tells the story.

How about a view of the rim? I'll wager that it's pebbly also.

It looks like some sort of environmental erosion of some sort.

Cast counterfeits have that same mottled look to them. Just throwing this out there. The corrosion looks too subtle to be acid, a fine sandblasting might be a consideration. People do crazy things to try to clean their coins.

What's going on at the top of the left wheat ear? Does the rim really disappear on the reverse at the 6-8 o'clock position?
