Any idea why this penny I found looks exactly like a 1943 steel penny? It weighs 2.40 grams and is not magnetic. Any info would be great. Thanks

Could it possibly be a unplated planchet? It weighs 2.40 grams

More than likely the copper was removed from the 1985 cent. 85's had a thin copper clad over zinc and it's easy to remove. A lot of high school chem classes do it as an assignment. The weight fits within the tolerance of normal weight. I have a 1985 D and a 1987 D without copper clad. I may be wrong so we'll let the experts take over.

2.7 grams for a 1943 is normal. 1985 should weigh 2.5 grams +/- .12 grams mint tolerance. What you have is an environmentally damaged coin like from being buried or intentional removal of the copper plating.

Your entire photos have absolutely zero color in them. This makes me think that you are trying to fool us.

Regardless of picture the fact is if the cent weighs 2.5 or in tolerance but has steel like color then it has been introduced to some type of acid.

Looks like the plating was removed/zinc added on the outside of this coin? If the surface is showing a rough texture on the fields, it may had been a zinc added over plating. (the roughness from the zinc dust under the plating. If it weren't plated, then the fields would be smooth.

Plating removed. If it was a non-plated planchet, it would be struck up better.

@fplagge that's the exact color they showed up when I took them. They're not black and white photos, they are that color. I would never fool anyone. This is why I posted it here, I've never seen one like this. No black and white. Sorry if it looks like it's black and white.
