Hello community is this 2017 Fredrick Douglas quarter have die cracks. On obverse a crack goes through entire coin. Any help *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***  |

Very cool find, it is called a bisecting rim to rim die crack, not often found in the wild. You may wish to submit it here: http://cuds-on-coins.com/rim-to-rim...u-s-coins-2/ You can get credit for the discovery, might even be worth after submitting it to ANACS (cheap and they cover these error/varieties) as the discovery piece. Though I don't have the current Cherry Pickers Guide to verify it's new. For sure worth a small premium, maybe even a medium premium depending on the interest level. Hmm I'm a little less sure about this than @west. Are you sure this isn't dried glue or something stuck to the surface of this quarter?

I agree with Spence. Suggest giving the coin a long soak in 100% acetone. Lets us know what the results are.

Thanks for all your feedback. I'm not here to show findings on my end to alter the coin or community of the truth. All suggestions are grateful. My collection may not be the best yet it's worth more then money. It's time I spend with my son and we enjoy it. Thanks again for acetone dip yet I know better then to clean a coin. I'll send to anacs and take chances thanks again merry Xmas and God bless u all

If you look on both sides of coin the cracks are mirrored it's impossible to get adhesive perfect as the cracks are

Zander; The experts have made only a suggestion to try acetone to see if it is a stain. It will not harm your coin and is not considered cleaning. Using that product will not cost you nearly as much as getting it slabbed. I too, think it is a stain but it is your money and your coin.

Just my Two Cents. When an anomaly is highlighted by a change in color or tone from one side of the anomaly to the other , it is very suspect of something that has altered the coin post mint. |

Lets take a look at the right side of your coin for a minute.
On the obverse the line, crack, glue edge, stain edge - what ever it is - is at the TOP of the coin, which would be the BOTTOM of the reverse side.
Now, on the Reverse- the same thing (line, crack, glue edge, stain edge - what ever it is) is again at the TOP of the coin - not the bottom.
So these two events are not mirrored or lined up.
to prove us wrong, please post up a close-up (in good focus) of the thing you call a crack - if it is, it will be a raised line. (which in your images, it doesn't.)

I'm in the "not a crack" camp with this coin. I wouldn't waste my money getting it slabbed, although sometimes that can be worth the education. Try the acetone bath, it won't hurt your coin. Buy the acetone from a hardware store. Don't use nail polish, it has other chemicals you don't want on your coin. Search past posts from here on CCF for more info on using acetone.  |
